Creative Together Collaboration UoE

A Study in Conflict

For this collaborative project, I teamed up with Ed Hart, a History and Politics student from University of Exeter, to explore the 1980s punk movement — a fashion genre soaked in history, aggression, and discord, which felt exciting to dissect through design.

We started by immersing ourselves in punk subculture imagery, taking inspiration from artists like Vivienne Westwood, and soon found ourselves drawn into the political and historical conflicts happening at the height of the punk movement. Alongside this, we carried out primary research by interviewing local punk musicians to deepen our understanding of the culture firsthand.

Together, we developed a final piece centred around a pair of Crustpunk Patch Pants. It was Ed’s first time sewing, and inspired by punk zines, we designed original fabric prints using archival newspaper articles from the Cornish mining strikes. This piece will be exhibited in the University archive space later this term.
